Leveling the Playing Field: Lessons in Persistence and Precision with Alstrum

Entrepreneurship is often defined by the decisions made in the face of uncertainty. In a recent episode of the Sbur Decision Lab series, we sat down with Kai Francis Kaizuka, the solo founder of Alstrum, to explore how he is navigating the complex world of FinTech and capital markets.

Kai is on a mission to democratize retail trading through his app, Strike, by providing everyday investors with the same institutional-grade data and real-time positioning insights used by major hedge funds.

Here are the key takeaways for entrepreneurs from our conversation:

1. Solve a Problem You Live

Kai’s journey began because he was "living the problem" himself. He found that making informed trading decisions required a fragmented set of tools costing between $2,400 and $3,600 annually—a significant barrier for most retail traders. By identifying a personal pain point that resonated with a broader market, he found a mission worth pursuing.

2. The Hardest Decision: Sticking to It

When asked about his toughest entrepreneurial choice, Kai didn't point to a technical hurdle but to the mental fortitude required to keep going. During the bootstrapping phase, as personal reserves burn low, the temptation to return to a stable job is constant. Kai believes that having a "pain problem" so close to his own experience allows him to focus on the mission over immediate profit, which fuels his persistence.

3. Action Over Analysis Paralysis

In the face of tough challenges—like deciding whether to sign a significant cloud contract when company accounts are tight—Kai follows a clear framework:

  • Step Back: Take a moment to gain fresh eyes.

  • Take Action: Don't get lost in "analysis paralysis".

  • Course Correct: Most decisions aren't final; you can always adjust once you are in motion.

4. Differentiate Through Integration and AI

While the market for trading tools is large, Alstrum differentiates itself from giants like TradingView by moving beyond simple charts. By integrating AI and automation, Strike doesn't just show data; it suggests and executes trades based on a user’s specific risk tolerance, effectively leveling the playing field for the "uninformed" retail trader.

5. Moving Toward the Future

With a background at State Street and a successful previous venture in Uganda, Kai is now seeking $500,000 in pre-seed funding. This capital is earmarked for a mobile launch and scaling to 1,000 professional sign-ups, moving Alstrum one step closer to making investing a "human right" in the 21st century.
