At Sbur Decision Lab, we feature entrepreneurs sharing their stories and decision-making processes so you can make smarter decisions and achieve success. Recently, we sat down with Ben Pope, co-founder of Mellicell, to discuss his journey in developing a revolutionary oral therapeutic targeting obesity, Alzheimer's, and Fragile X.

Here are the key learning points and insights for entrepreneurs from our conversation:

Finding Your "Why"

  • Personal Connection Drives Passion: Ben’s motivation is deeply personal, rooted in family experiences with diseases like obesity and dementia.

  • Scalable Solutions: A personal mission becomes a powerful venture when it addresses a global need, as millions worldwide stand to benefit from these solutions.

Making the Hard Calls on Team

  • Decisive Action on Leadership: One of the most difficult decisions Ben faced was realizing a co-founder was no longer the right fit.

  • Prioritizing the Business: While hard on the individuals involved and the remaining team, making necessary leadership changes is ultimately essential for the health of the company.

A Framework for Decision-Making

  • The "One-Way vs. Two-Way Door" Concept: For decisions that are easily undone (two-way doors), move quickly. For irreversible decisions (one-way doors), take the time to think deeply.

  • Iterate Rapidly: As a first-time founder, making mistakes is inevitable. The key is to take action and quickly iterate to fix poor decisions.

  • Trust Your Judgment: Experience matters, but if something does not make sense to you, it probably doesn't. Learn to trust your gut even when dealing with more experienced advisors.

  • Leverage Expert Advice: While you must make the final decision, surround yourself with experienced advisors to fill knowledge gaps.

Strategy and Execution

  • Identify Value Inflection Points: Mellicell is currently focused on moving into the clinic, a major milestone that requires strategic fundraising.

  • Validated Entry Points: By choosing to focus on Fragile X first—a condition that acts as a biomarker for their other indications—they can validate three different diseases with a single clinical trial.

  • Build a Diverse, Experienced Team: Their team includes experts in oral small molecule drug development, translational biology, and clinical medicine with proven track records in pharma deals.
